He saw where I was living previously and seemed dissatisfied. He would not take no for an answer.

Since I intend to protect Jusis from threats, this arrangement is favorable for me as well.

It is cool and comfortable, and the floor is smooth. It is lit more thoroughly than the hostel. I have no complaints.

I dislike the lack of a second exit, however, so I will do that for now.

I'll furnish it later. There is... too much to keep track of when filling a room.

[It isn't Ash who gets the door, but Orthie the Houndour. He's clever, and it leaves Berry free to cuddle Ash who is on his bed with his head in hands.

Yeah, panic.]

[Good enough! Because there is not a human Rean when the door opens, but a cat. Rean bows his head gratefully and trots on in, hopping up on the bed and beginning to purr, mostly to let Ash know he's here.]

You are so lucky my dogs like cats, Schwarzer.

[He doesn't look up and he sound shaky and...maybe like he's been crying.]

Haha. I mean, I'd hope they'd recognize my scent regardless of what I am, at this point.

[Rean bunts his head against Ash's hand. Ash doesn't need to look up, just accept the snuggles.]

[He shifts to let Rean closer. Unfortunately, he has a dog in his lap so there is no cat dad in lap for now.

He'll get pets, though.]

Fuck, thought I was done with them.

[That's okay. Rean can find another place to curl up. At his side, on his chest, or just vaguely beside him. That's the nice thing about being small and flexible!]

Well, until they're completely wiped out, I suppose there's always a chance of them rearing their ugly heads again. But you are done with them.

We're not going to let them near you, and we're not going to let them take us, either. I know it's easy to say that, but... you know us by now, right? They're going to have a hell of a fight on their hands if they want to try again.

It's just...they're real fuckin' good at making people disappear. I did some digging, once, to try an' find anything about me from before they got me. As far as the records care, there weren't any baby Johans in Germany when I was born.

I know. They have to be, if they've been doing this for so long. And I won't deny I'm nervous, too.

And I know this doesn't erase the pain of not knowing, but... you're not baby Johan anymore. You're Ash. Our Ash.
